Piano Pedagogue Anna Pavlovna Kantor Dies at 98

She was known as the longtime teacher of pianist Evgeny Kissin

The highly regarded piano pedagogue taught at the Gnessin Music School in Moscow, Russia.

"Soon after I began my studies with her, Anna Pavlovna became for me much more than just a teacher: during all these years she has been a real friend, like a family member," Kissin wrote. "She became very close to our whole family, and 30 years ago she moved to live with us."

"She was my only piano teacher, and everything I am able to do on the piano I owe to her. She was a truly remarkable woman, a person of rare integrity and purity," he added.

Kantor began teaching Kissin when he was six, and unlike most piano teachers, she did not demonstrate for Kissin in their lessons. She quickly grew close to Kissin's family and lived with them in New York until her death.

Our condolences to Ms. Kantor's family, friends, and students.
