Dvořák Violin Concerto Premiere

Dvořák Violin Concerto Premiered On This Day in 1883

The concerto was inspired and dedicated to Hungarian violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim,  however it's believed the end result fell short of his expectation and he never performed the work

Antonín Dvořák's Violin Concerto in A Minor Op. 53 was premiered on this day in 1883.

The Violin Concerto was commissioned by the renowned Austro-Hungarian violinist Joseph Joachim. From 1879 to 1882, Dvořák and Joachim worked together on the score. In November 1882, Joachim performed the piece for Dvořák at a private rehearsal, prompting final revisions from the composer. However, Joachim never played the concerto in a public concert. The world premiere took place on October 14, 1883, at the National Theater in Prague, with young Czech violinist František Ondříček as the soloist.
