Applications are this week set to close for the 2020 Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition – to be held in Shanghai, China from the 4th to the 25th of August

Applications are this week set to close for the 2020 Shanghai Isaac Stern International Violin Competition – to be held in Shanghai, China from the 4th to the 25th of August. 

Open to violinists of any nationality aged between 16 and 32, the 2020 1st prize winner will receive US $100,000. 

The 2020 jury will comprise: David Stern (Co-Chair), Vera Tsu Weiling (Co-Chair), Martin Campbell-White, Glenn Dicterow, Emmanuel Hondré, Weigang Li, Ning Feng, Philip Setzer, Hagai Shaham, Joel Smirnoff, Kyoko Takezawa, Maxim Vengerov and Jian Wang.

“We all see that for an international competition, the influence and fairness of its jury is a critical reason for contestants to choose to participate … ” Executive President of the competition’s organisation committee, Fedina Zhou has told The Violin Channel.

“Since its establishment, the competition has imposed stringent rules – we disclose the pupil relationship with judges and all scores … in fact, making scores entirely public is rarely seen at competitions around the world,” she has said.

Any applicants who have received a 1st, 2nd or 3rd prize at the Tchaikovsky, Queen Elisabeth or Wieniawski International Violin Competitions will be exempt from DVD pre-selection – and will be provided with travel reimbursement (up to USD $1,000) and free accommodation to participate in the opening live round in China.

Previous 1st prizes winners include VC Young Artist Nancy Zhou.

Applications to be received by the 20th of January, 2020.
