Boston Symphony Announces Return to In-Person Performances

For the first time since March 2020, the symphony will return to Boston's Symphony Hall for in-person performances starting September 30, 2021

Running to April 30, the 2021-22 season opens with conductor Andris Nelsons, composer John Williams, and Anne-Sophie Mutter as the soloist in Williams’ Violin Concerto No. 2 — plus Beethoven’s "Consecration of the House Overture" and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra.

Highlights of the season include Berg’s "Wozzeck" with Bo Skovhus and Christine Goerke, a new cycle of six major works by Richard Strauss, a performance cycle of all five Beethoven Piano Concertos with soloist Mitsuko Uchida, a European tour, a recording project in partnership with the Gewandhausorchester, Leipzig, and a return to Carnegie Hall in March.

“This past year has deepened our appreciation of music as a necessary source of reflection, contemplation, inspiration, comfort, and growth, and we feel extremely blessed to work at making and performing music together," Nelsons said in a press release.

"We are immeasurably excited at the prospect of sharing this music with our treasured audiences once again. The BSO’s 2021-22 season at Symphony Hall will be a great celebration, marking the return to concert life and the reunion with our beloved music community.

"We have all been waiting for this moment for a very long time."
