French cellist Paul Tortelier was born on this day in 1914.
A student of Louis Feuillard and Gérard Hekking at the Paris Conservatoire, he is remembered as one of the eminent cello pedagogues of the 20th Century.
Maestro Tortelier served as Principal Cellist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and held teaching positions at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de la Musique, Folkwang Hochschule, Conservatoire National de Region Nice and the Central Conservatoire in Beijing - his famed students including virtuoso Jacqueline du Pré.
Passing away in 1990, aged 76, he received worldwide recognition in the 1970s and 80s after recording a series of cello masterclasses for Britain's BBC TV.
