Cellist Steven Isserlis Awarded 2017 ‘Wigmore Hall’ Accolade

It has been announced that British cellist Steven Isserlis has been awarded the 2017 Wigmore Medal - in recognition of his long-standing relationship with London’s Wigmore Hall.

“Since his debut in 1977, Steven has presented a number of series at the Hall … today he is acclaimed worldwide and enjoys a distinguished career as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, author and broadcaster … we are thrilled to present him with this medal …” Wigmore Hall Director John Gilhooly has said.

"I’m so happy that my long, long relationship with the Wigmore Hall has, in a sense, been made official … I love that place!” Steven has told The Violin Channel.

“The acoustics, the atmosphere, the sense of an audience truly listening, with an absolutely open mind, to whatever one offers them - it’s all unique and wonderful … ” the 58 year old virtuoso has said.

First awarded in 2007, the Wigmore Medal recognises major international classical music artists who have displayed a strong connection, throughout their career, with the venue.

Previous recipients include Sir András Schiff, Thomas Quasthoff, Christian Gerhaher, Menahem Pressler and Dame Felicity Lott.
