ChamberQUEER Presents BaroQUEER Concert at Brooklyn's Shapeshifter Lab
The concert, which covers dance music from the sarabande to tango, will be held on October 23, 2023
ChamberQUEER is a New York-based organization highlighting LGBTQ+ voices in classical music by applying a queer lens to the concert experience — its BaroQUEER concert will explore the legacy of dance in the Western canon.
Covering tango, the sarabande, and everything in between, the concert will include works by Charpentier, Corelli, Piazzolla, Cullen O'Neil, and Rufus Wainwright.
In doing so, the program aims to frame the concept of "historically informed performance" as a critical conversation with the past, tracing the undercurrents that brought musical traces of French and English courtly dances through to our own time.
The concert will feature Jules Biber (baroque cello), Danielle Buonaiuto (soprano), and Brian Mummert (baritone), all of whom are core members of ChamberQUEER.
They will be joined by guests Rafa Prendergast (baroque violin), Keats Dieffenbach (baroque violin), Peter Lim (harpsichord and recorder), and Eli McCormack (male soprano).
The program, and its historical narrative, was conceived by the musicologist Isaac Jean-François.
BaroQUEER will take place on Monday, October 23, 2023, 7 PM at the ShapeShifter Lab in Brooklyn. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $10 for students and arts workers.
