Conductor Dan Ettinger to Depart from the Stuttgart Philharmonic
The Israeli conductor will end his association with the orchestra in the summer of 2024, having led the ensemble since 2015
The city of Stuttgart recently announced that the Israeli conductor Dan Ettinger will stand down from his position as Chief Conductor and General Music Director of the Stuttgart Philharmonic in the summer of 2024. He has held the position since 2015 and has developed the orchestra substantially during that time.
The statement said that Ettinger's resignation was for "personal reasons," and did not offer any further explanation for the abruptness of the decision.
Alongside his position in Stuttgart, Ettinger has served as the Music Director of the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv since 2018. He was previously Music Director of the National Theater in Mannheim (from 2009 to 2016), as well as principal conductor of the Israel Symphony Orchestra and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra.
Ettinger initially studied the piano and was a singer in the early part of his career. He made his conducting debut in Tel Aviv in 1999.
"I am proud of the successes of all the years of working together with the Stuttgart Philharmonic and of the many special concerts," Ettinger said. "The orchestra is now artistically stronger than ever before and can look to the future with confidence."
"Dan Ettinger was a real stroke of luck for the Stuttgart Philharmonic," said Dr Fabian Mayer, the First Mayor of Stuttgart. "He shaped the state capital's orchestra into a first-class ensemble with artistic power, creativity and an absolute awareness of quality."
"We look back with great gratitude on his extremely successful work over the past eight and a half years in our cultural city," Mayer continued. "I wish him all the best for his career and hope to be able to welcome him back to our orchestra as a guest conductor in the future. The coming season will be particularly varied for the audience: with a wealth of different, well-known conductors in the second half of the anniversary year."
