English viola virtuoso Lionel Tertis died on this day in 1975 – aged 98.
He is remembered as one of the most eminent violists of all time.
A strong champion of new music, he served as the dedicatee of a number of important viola repertoire additions - including works by Arnold Bax, Frank Bridge, Gustav Holst, Benjamin Dale, York Bowen and William Walton.
The Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition was established in 1980 to honour his memory.
