BREAKING | Finalists Announced at Germany's Stuttgart International Violin Competition

The final round will commence LIVE here on The Violin Channel on Saturday, July 24 at 1:00 PM (GMT+2) Stuttgart time — 7:00 AM (ET) New York time and 8:00 PM (GMT+9) in Seoul

The four finalists have today been announced at the 2021 inaugural Stuttgart International Violin Competition, in Stuttgart, Germany.

Hosted by the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts and the Guadagnini Foundation, the competition is open to international violinists 28 years of age and younger.

As the competition's official international media and broadcast partner, all rounds are being streamed LIVE on The Violin Channel and are available now for playback. You won't miss a beat.

  • The 2021 Stuttgart International Violin Competition finalists are:

    • Gyehee Kim (27, South Korea)

    • Hana Chang (18, United States)

    • Anna Agafia Egholm (25, Denmark)

    • Eva Rabchevska (24, Ukraine)

This year’s four finalists were selected, via two live recital rounds, from an initial 21 in-person first round candidates — which were invited to Stuttgart from 266 international applicants from 43 different countries.

“We've all been extremely impressed with the very high standard of the playing we've heard this week in our opening and semi-final rounds here at our inaugural competition, in Stuttgart," Markus Klein, President from the Guadagnini Foundation and event organizer told The Violin Channel.

"I don’t envy our jury members who I'm sure are going to have a very difficult time on Saturday deciding between these fine, young, world-class violinists."

"Each of our four finalists is all from completely different backgrounds, countries, and schooling influences and each has already displayed this week very distinctive styles and diverse approaches to their music making. Saturday is going to be extraordinarily exciting!" he said.

For the final round of the competition, each of the four finalists is required to perform either the Brahms, Tchaikovsky, or Sibelius Violin Concertos — under the baton of conductor Nabil Shehata and the Stuttgart Philharmonic.

The first prize winner will receive €25,000, a number of important solo performance opportunities, and be offered the three year loan of a 1746 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini fine violin, from the Guadagnini Foundation, to further advance with career development, if needed.

The second and third prize winners will receive €15,000 and €10,000, respectively.

This year's special prize of €3,000 for the best performance of the newly-commissioned set work “APOPLEX”’, by Israeli composer Ohad Ben-Ari, in the semi-final round of the competition was today awarded to finalist Hana Chang.

"I can assure everyone, that the 21 young violinists invited here this week in Stuttgart can expect to be judged impartially, in a fair and completely transparent way. Fairness and transparency are our absolute priority," Dr. Regula Rapp, President of the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts and Co-Host of the competition this week told The Violin Channel.

"For our members of the jury this year, we asked professionals from numerous different areas, including soloists, university professors, well-known string quartet players, and critics."

"Of course there is no guarantee of a successful career after winning any competition, but it can definitely help you more forward and get yourself ahead," she said.

This year's international jury is made up of Ingolf Turban (President), Harald Eggebrecht, Rudolf Koelman, Natalia Prishepenko, Josef Rissin, Christian Sikorski, and VC Artist Tobias Feldmann.

The opening and semi-final rounds of the competition have already been viewed by over 150,000 viewers on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram, from more than 51 countries, and with online coverage having to date already reached upwards of 600,000 people.
