Greenwich Symphony Appoints New Concertmaster

Argentinian violinist Sami Merdinian will step into the role

The Greenwich Symphony Orchestra recently announced that Argentinian violinist Sami Merdinian will serve as its new concertmaster, beginning with the 2024/25 season.

Merdinian is the winner of multiple competitions, including the Gold Medal at the XII International Young Solo Instrumentalists Competition in Argentina and First Prize at the New Talent Competition in Slovakia (organized by European Radio). He has also received the Rising Star Award from Tiffany & Co., and was named Outstanding Artist of the Year by the Argentinian Press.

He is frequently hear on radio, having been featured on WQXR in New York, “Spiegenzall” live from the Concertgebouw, Argentinian Classical National Station, America’s NPR, South Korea's KBS, and the BBC.

A prolific recording artist, Merdinian can be heard on discs from Universal Records, Canary Classics, CAG Records, Green Parrot Records, and Bright Shiny Things. He received a GRAMMY nomination for his tango album, Masters of the Bandoneon.

As soloist, Merdinian has appeared with the Montevideo Philharmonic, the Argentinian National Symphony, the Charlemagne Orchestre, the Gagneung Philharmonic in South Korea, the Philharmonia of the Nations at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Buenos Aires Philharmonic, Rochester and South Carolina Philharmonics, and the Midland and Duluth Symphonies.

He is also is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the New Docta International Music Festival, which brings world-class musicians to Argentina to perform, to inspire children of all backgrounds, and to nurture the next generation of Latin American talent.
