Happy Birthday, Yannick Nézet-Séguin!

The Canadian conductor turns 49 today!


Born in Montreal, Yannick Nézet-Séguin studied at Montreal's Conservatory of Music, studying piano, composition, chamber music, and conducting with Carlo Maria Giulini. He was also a student at Westminster Choir College, where he studied choral conducting with Joseph Flummerfelt.

From 2008 to 2018, Nézet-Séguin was the Music Director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, as well as Principal Guest Conductor at the London Philharmonic Orchestra between 2008 and 2014.

Presently, he serves as the music director of New York’s Metropolitan Opera and music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He has also led Canada’s Orchestre Métropolitain as artistic director and principal conductor since 2000.

He regularly partners with the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Bavarian Radio Symphony, and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

In 2012 Nézet-Séguin was made a Companion of the Order of Canada for his services to music. He also holds honorary doctorates from the Université du Québec à Montréal and McGill University.

In 2022, Nézet-Séguin received the GRAMMY award for Best Orchestral Performance for a disc focusing on the works of Florence Price.
