The organizers of the 2016 Wieniawski International Violin Competition have today released the jurors’ individual scores and rankings from all 4 rounds of the 2016 competition
The organizers of the 2016 Wieniawski International Violin Competition have today released the jurors' individual scores and rankings for all 4 rounds of the 2016 competition - highlighting polarising opinions from the 11 member jury.
In the Final round, 1st prize winner Veriko Tchumburidze from Georgia/Turkey was ranked number 1 by 7 of the 11 juror members.
VC Young Artist Bomsori Kim was ranked in 1st place by the remaining four jurors.
VERIKO TCHUMBURIDZE | SHOSTAKOVICH VIOLIN CONCERTO NO. 1 | 2016 WIENIAWSKI INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION | 1ST PRIZE
VC YOUNG ARTIST BOMSORI KIM | SHOSTAKOVICH VIOLIN CONCERTO NO. 1 | 2016 WIENIAWSKI INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION | JOINT 2ND PRIZE
Jury chair Maxim Vengerov abstained from voting in the final round of the competition as his student Maria Włoszczowska had progressed, the competition’s organisers have indicated.
He did however vote ‘NO’ to VC Young Artist Richard Lin and eventual winner Veriko Tchumburidze from progressing from Stage 3 to the Final Round.
Jurors Ilya Gringolts from Russia, Robert Kabara from Poland and Mayumi Seiler from Japan/Germany ranked VC Young Artist Bomsori Kim in 6th out of 7 prizes - despite the 26 year old having been awarded four 1st place rankings and the competition’s audience and television prizes.
Jurors Alena Baeva, Ilya Gringolts and Mayumi Seiler ranked Polish finalist Maria Włoszczowska in 2nd position, despite 7 jurors placing her in the bottom 2 and outspoken local critic Jakub Pushalski suggesting the 25 year old violinist had ‘failed’ in her Wieniawski Concerto and ‘continued off-key playing’ in her performance of the Brahms.
Both Alena Baeva and Ilya Gringolts scored VC Young Artist Richard Lin as this year's weakest candidate in the Final round.
MARIA WLOSZCZOWSKA | WIENIAWSKI VIOLIN CONCERTO NO. 2 | 2016 WIENIAWSKI INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION | 6TH PRIZE
VC YOUNG ARTIST RICHARD LIN | BEETHOVEN VIOLIN CONCERTO | 2016 WIENIAWSKI INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION | 5TH PRIZE
"I have been to many competitions and I must say I am very proud of this one, because the level is not only high in technical performance, but also we have great musicians here and wonderful personalities ..." Jury Chair Maxim Vengerov has said.
Juror Zakhar Bron controversially told local Polish radio during the competition: ‘Many decisions made by the jury this year are wrong …’.
The 68 year old, who scored Veriko Tchumburidze, Maria Włoszczowska and Ryosuke Suho as his least preferred candidates, went on to say that in his opinion several of the Finalists should not have been admitted even to the first stage of this year's competition.
“Usually I wouldn’t be so rigorous and assertive with my judgement but I don’t know how much time I have left in the world …” Bron has told Polskie Radio.
