Markus Klein on the Stuttgart International Violin Competition's 2nd Edition

Organized by the Guadagnini Foundation, the competition will take place in Stuttgart, Germany between February 19-26, 2024

Organized by the Guadagnini Foundation and the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts, the Stuttgart International Violin Competition is open to international violinists 28 years of age and younger. All applications are to be received by July 31, 2023.

The Violin Channel recently discussed the upcoming competition with Markus Klein, President of the Guadagnini Foundation and the competition's organizer.

Tell us about the Stuttgart International Violin Competition. When was it founded and what are its goals and core values?

The Stuttgart International Violin Competition started with the founding of the Guadagnini Foundation in 2018.
The guiding principle of the foundation is to support young, highly talented string players in an outstanding way and offer them an ideal platform to face a large, powerful competition. Our goal is to establish and perpetuate the Stuttgart International Violin Competition as one of the world's most outstanding and important competitions.

When and where will the competition take place next and which ensemble will perform with the finalists?

The 2nd Stuttgart International Violin Competition will take place from February 19th to 26th, 2024. We are very pleased with our strong partnerships with the University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart and with the Stuttgart Philharmonic, which will again accompany the final round and the prizewinners' concert.

Eva Rabchevska, the competition’s first edition first prize winner received a generous cash prize, a number of important performance engagements, the loan of a 1746 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin, as well as artist management for the three years following the competition. What can the 2024 winners expect to receive?

All of the prizes mentioned are an integral part of the competition and will be provided in the second edition. This includes the loan of Giovanni Battista Guadagnini's violin from 1746, as well as the orchestral and concert engagements with all of the competition's cooperation partners. The prize money was increased to a total of €63,000 plus special prizes.

Can you tell us a little more about the jury that will be adjudicating the competition?

We are very pleased with the appointment of Ingolf Turban as the jury chairman. We are certain that with him, we will continue to establish a jury that is always focused on the candidates as a core element of our competition. It is essential to us that all participants take something from the competition for their own artistic development, even if they don't make it to the second round or the final.

Compared to the first competition, the jury has been strengthened and enjoys a great international reputation. In addition to Ingolf Turban, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Ulf Wallin, Hagai Shaham, Rudolf Koelman, Suyoen Kim, Dr. Harald Eggebrecht, Josef Rissin and Stefan Fehlandt will be there.

What qualities are you looking for in your top prize winner?

We are looking for musicians who manage to assert themselves among the international top talents in this competition and who can present the very demanding competition repertoire in the most convincing way. Those who meet those quality expectations deserve excellent support from us.

What are your hopes for the development of your prize winners’ careers?

We hope that our support will open doors for top musical and artistic talents, which will hopefully lead to milestones in their future artistic path. Our goal is not only to reward perfection but also to promote interesting artistic personalities and accompany them on their journey. It is important to us to support the artist — and that doesn't just happen with the prizes but also with the format and implementation of the competition itself. Preparing and participating in such a competition, socializing with other candidates, and receiving feedback from the highly qualified jury: all of these promote artistic development.
