Midori Named Artistic Director of Ravinia Steans Music Institute's Piano & Strings Program

The renowned violinist will step into the role for the 2024 summer season, succeeding Miriam Fried

Japanese violinist Midori has recently been named the new Artistic Director of the Piano and Strings Program at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute (RSMI). She will begin in the 2024 summer season and succeeds Miriam Fried — who has been overseeing the program for the last three decades.

Prior to Miriam Fried, the late Robert Mann (1988) and Walter Levin (1989–93) held the posts.

Founded in 1988, RSMI offers private coaching, masterclasses, and performance opportunities to exceptional young musicians who are at the beginning of their careers. In her new role, Midori will lead young string players, pianists, and pre-formed chamber ensembles through their intensive rehearsal and coaching schedules — as well as giving some lessons of her own.

Born in Osaka, Midori first learned the violin from her mother, Setsu Goto. When she was aged just eleven, Zubin Mehta invited her to perform alongside the New York Philharmonic in their New Year's Eve concert.

She has appeared with many of the world's major orchestras, collaborated with leading chamber players, and has an extensive discography to her name. Midori is also a committed humanitarian and has founded several non-profit organizations, for which she was made a United Nations Messenger of Peace.

"Working with young musicians has been central to my career, and this program is one of the most important of its kind in the music field. It has been led for the last 30 years by Miriam Fried, and I am honored to inherit her remarkable legacy as I lead the program forward in the coming years."
