UK's Music Masters Launches Diversity Audit Tool

The music education charity released its diversity and inclusion tool to dismantle systemic racism and inequality within the UK music sector

The updated Inclusive Music Index tool, operating under the acronym I’M IN, was recently launched to celebrate National Inclusion Week.

I’M IN is a self-analysis diversity and inclusion (D&I) tool which allows music organisations to evaluate how, where, and why D&I is considered within their strategies, structures, practices, and policies — and to identify where change is required.

The program was introduced in tandem with a rebranding plan in 2020 of the London Music Masters, which is now known as Music Masters (MM). The tool is designed to be an annual audit so that organizations can measure their progress over time.

The tool was first founded in 2017 and had its first trial version launched in June 2020. Upon positive and considerable response to the program, a second cohort began in November 2020.

During trials, a total of 60 UK organisations took part – including orchestras, choirs, music education hubs, record labels, venues, festivals, charities, publishers, schools, and artist management agencies — serving over one million people across the UK and internationally.

The newly released full version of I’M IN is available through two routes. The free Independent Route provides the tool and guidance to encourage effective conversations around D&I; plus, resources and links to support action-taking after using the tool. It allows organizations to independently decide what action to pursue.

The Supported Route is a paid version at 750 euros providing support around I’M IN to help organizations turn their conversations into action. Those participating will receive guidance from a designated I’M IN Advisor, an experienced D&I professional, to help address any D&I challenges highlighted by the tool.

“Change starts by taking a hard look at what we are getting wrong, and what we are getting right and I’M IN will help all of the organisations to do just that,” said Executive Director Rob Adediran. “I can’t wait to see what happens when they do and look forward to working with them all to build a platform for real change.”

“Music Masters has created a tool that can support, challenge, and encourage music organisations to identify, explore and understand areas of inequality within their own structures, cultures, processes, and programs, enabling them to take deep and meaningful action from the inside out,” stated MM CEO Roz De Vile.

“The pandemic has exacerbated inequality of access to music for so many, and the music industry has suffered hugely,” she continued. “But there has never been a better time to build our organisations to be stronger and more inclusive, and so we have decided to offer free access to the I’M IN tool for any organization working in and with music.

“Through I’M IN, we aim to build a community of like-minded organisations who will stand together with us to drive positive change.”
