Composer Stacy Garrop – ‘The Battle for the Ballot’ [WORLD PREMIERE]
Commissioned by the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, the piece was inspired by the 100th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which secured the right for women to vote in the United States for the first time in history
Conductor Cristian Macelaru and the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra performing the world premiere performance of Chicago-based composer Stacy Garrop‘s ‘The Battle for the Ballot’.
“In the fall of 2019, I began hunting for the writings and speeches of Suffragists and I came upon speeches by Susan B. Anthony, Carrie W. Clifford, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Adella Hunt Logan, Mary Church Terrell, Jane Addams and Carrie Chapman Catt and decided to use their words as the basis for this work," Stacy told the Violin Channel this week.
"When sitting down to compose, I realized that writing for narrator was akin to writing a concerto for solo instrument and orchestra, as the text needs to come through clearly," she said.
Recorded virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic and premiered on August 9th, 2020.
