Tokyo's NHK Symphony Appoints New Chief Conductor

The Japanese orchestra announced the appointment of Fabio Luisi as its Chief Conductor, effective in September 2022.

The Italian conductor will take on the role for three years.

Luisi first conducted the NHK Symphony in July 2001. He currently serves as the Music Director at the Dallas Symphony and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra — and is in the process of finishing his tenure with Zurich Opera.

He has also guest conducted world-renowned orchestras including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Münchner Philharmoniker, and the London Symphony Orchestra.

"We hope that those who love classical music will feel the NHK Symphony Orchestra’s 'new aspect of music' under the baton of Maestro Luisi through television and radio in addition to our concerts," the orchestra said in a statement.
