Nicola Benedetti to Receive Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama

Benedetti will receive the honor at St David's Hall in Cardiff, Wales on July 8, 2022

The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) has named violinist Nicola Benedetti as one of its Honorary Fellows for 2022. She will receive the honor alongside six other Fellows at a ceremony next month.

Alongside her stature as a performer, the RWCMD particularly congratulated Benedetti on her commitment to community outreach, saying that she "epitomized the connection between artistic and social purpose".

During recent periods of lockdown, the RWCMD's percussion department took part in the Virtual Sessions run by the Benedetti Foundation. 7000 other musicians were also involved with this initiative, which shows the strength of Benedetti's influence in the community.

The other Honorary Fellows for 2022 are Sarah Alexander, Chief Executive of the National Youth Orchestra; Paule Constable, Olivier award-winning lighting designer; Gareth Evans, film director, screenwriter and action choreographer; Anthony Matsena, performer, director and choreographer; Kel Matsena, actor, writer and dancer; and Dennis Rollins, trombonist and educator.

"Our new Fellows represent some of the most forward-thinking, creative and acclaimed artists in the UK and we warmly welcome them to the College community," said Helena Gaunt, the RWCMD's Principal.

"They each embody the College’s spirit and ambition to lead through collaboration and innovation alongside deep craft training, nurturing an expert and inclusive community and inspiring the industry change-makers of the future."

A graduate of the Yehudi Menuhin School, where she studied with Lord Menuhinand Natasha Boyarskaya, Benedetti won the BBC Young Musician of the Year award when she was just 16 years old.

She performs regularly with many of the world's finest orchestras and conductors, and her educational organization, the Benedetti Foundation, provides a multitude of online resources, live events, and educational materials to promote classical music.

In 2017, she was the youngest ever recipient of the Queen’s Medal for Music and has received nine honorary degrees.

Most recently, withdrew from her concert appearances in June at England’s Aldeburgh Festival due to tendonitis in her wrist. We wish her a speedy recovery!
