Jacob von der Lippe's New Disc, "Sculpted Sound"

Released on the eponymous Von Der Lippe Records, the disc showcases the signature sound of the instruments from the luthier's workshop

The Norwegian luthier Jacob von der Lippe is celebrating twenty fruitful years of instrument-making by releasing an album exploring the sound colors of various instruments he has crafted.

Titled "Sculpted Sound," the disc consists of live recordings from concerts held around Oslo. The players are all owners of instruments by von der Lippe, and the concerts invited audience members to consider whether instruments by the same maker could be said to share a common sound — despite being played by different musicians.

"It is a pleasure to be a part of this project, and it will hopefully demonstrate that wonderful instruments are created in our own time, and that Jacob von der Lippe is an outstanding creator of fine instruments," said the Oslo-based soloist Arve Tellefsen.

"I liked the idea of a festival with sound as a common thread running through all the performances, and the feeling of community that comes with everyone playing on instruments made by the same instrument maker," said Maren Elle, a violinist in the Norwegian Radio Orchestra.

"The improvisational track is a bath in the sonic pool which is the room," said violinist Matias Jentoft of his favorite track on the album. "Everything is present on the recording: the instruments, the walls, and even the audience. The wide spectrum of timbre and volume is allowed to flourish through the microphones and out through your speakers."
