Famed French cellist Pierre Fournier died on this day in 1986 - aged 79.
A student of Paul Bazelaire and Anton Hekking, he is remembered as one of the pre-eminent cello virtuosi of all time - renowned for his elegant musicianship and majestic sound.
He performed regularly with the great musicians of his time, including Alfred Cortot, Jacques Thibaud, Wilhelm Furtwangler, Herbert von Karajan, Jan Kubelik, Artur Schnabel, Joseph Szigeti and William Primrose.
His famed students included Julian Lloyd Webber.
