American double bassist Aaron Olguin has been awarded 1st Prize in the solo division of the 2017 International Society of Bassists Competition, in Ithaca, New York.
A student of Gudrun Raschen and Jeff Bradetich at the University of North Texas, Aaron will receive US $2500, a bass bow by acclaimed maker Vladimir Radosavljevic - and a number of recital performance opportunities.
The 1st prize in the jazz division was awarded to bassist Luca Alemanno.
The 1st Prize in the orchestra division was awarded to bassist Adam Attard.
In this year’s bass makers' division, the 'Audience Favourite' prize was awarded to instrument and bow maker Arnold Schnitzer.
This year’s judges comprised: David Murray, Diana Gannett, Yuan Xiong Lu, Volkan Orhon, Anthony Stoops, Rick Stotijn, Hans Sturm, Todd Coolman, Eric Hochberg, Rufus Reid, Jorge Roeder, Marlene Rosenberg, Ali Yazdanfar, Kevin Brown, Colin Corner, Mark Morton, Brett Shurtliffe and Jeffrey Turner.
