Singapore Chinese Orchestra Names Quek Ling Kiong as Principal Conductor

Quek succeeds outgoing Principal Conductor Yeh Tsung, who has led the orchestra for twenty years

Conductor Quek Ling Kiong has served as the Singapore Chinese Orchestra's(SCO) Resident Conductor since 2013, while also simultaneously leading the Singapore National Youth Chinese Orchestra during that time.

Originally a percussionist, Quek studied in China at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Almost all of his conducting career has been with the SCO: he was appointed Conducting Assistant in 2003 and has only spent time away from the ensemble to study at the Zurich University of the Arts.

He succeeds outgoing Music Director Yeh Tsung, who will become the orchestra's Conductor Emeritus from 2023 onward. Yeh has been at the helm of the orchestra for the past twenty years, and also conducted the South Bend Symphony Orchestra concurrently.

The SCO took this opportunity to overhaul their management structure — they have appointed three musicians to serve under Quek as Section Leaders, and five more players will join them as members of the orchestra's Music Advisory Panel.

"This is an important move to pave the way for SCO’s succession planning," said Ng Siew Quan, the Chairman of the SCO Board.

"The Board and management of SCO are very grateful to Maestro Tsung Yeh for his leadership of the SCO over the last 20 years and for building the SCO into the world-class Chinese orchestra that it is today. We are very pleased that Maestro Tsung Yeh has agreed to continue contributing to SCO as Conductor Emeritus. I also congratulate Ling Kiong on his new appointment and wish him success in his new capacity."

"The SCO comprises a wealth of musical talent who have collectively propelled the SCO to be a renowned Chinese orchestra on the international stage," he added. "In the next stage of the SCO’s development, the artistic aspects of the SCO will be driven collectively by the conductors, section leaders and the Music Advisory Panel. I am confident that together, they will provide effective artistic leadership to the SCO."
