Barcelona Symphony Appoints New Music Director

47-year-old French conductor Ludovic Morlot will step into the role, effective from September 2022

Morlot's appointment was determined after a three-year search process, and in his new position, he will spend a minimum of 11 weeks a season with the orchestra.

He plans to advance the orchestra's digital presence and international residencies, develop talent and youth programs, and commit to expanding the symphony orchestra size.

"With Ludovic Morlot at the helm, the OBC reaches an international level to defend the role that symphonic music has to play in the 21st century," said Robert Brufau, Director of Barcelon's L’Auditori. "Morlot has proven his capacity to promote the artistic growth of large groups that, thanks to his leadership, have achieved great success. Modernity and rigour are part of his DNA as an artist, and this is evident in everything he does, from management to the stage with full awareness of the challenges of modern society."

Morlot will be conducting Barcelona Symphony the week of January 17 at L’Auditori. The program will include works by Bach, Betsy Jolas, Schumann, Carter, and Mahler, with pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard.

He currently serves as the Associate Artist of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra. Additionally, following eight years as Music Director of the Seattle Symphony, he received the honorary title as Conductor Emeritus.
