Sweden's Norrlandsoperan Names New Music Director and Principal Conductor

The Brazilian conductor Eduardo Strausser will step into the role from Fall 2024

Brazilian conductor Eduardo Strausser's newest position as the Music Director and Principal Conductor of Norrlandsoperan will run for an initial term of three seasons.

A strong advocate of contemporary music, Strausser studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen at the Zürich University of the Arts, and with György Kurtág and Brian Ferneyhough at the Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music.

The 2023/24 season sees him return to the Kansas City Symphony and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, as well as conducting engagements with Bamberger Symphoniker, Utah Symphony Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Orchestre de Montpellier, and the Argovia Philharmonic.

He also routinely works with orchestras in the Antipodes, such as the Sydney Symphony and the Queensland Symphony.

"I am incredibly pleased to welcome Eduardo Strausser as Norrlandsoperan’s new Principal Conductor," said Erik Mikael Karlsson, the CEO of Norrlandsoperan. "He is an open, positive, and curious conductor with international renown, and he possesses the perfect skills to artistically develop our symphony orchestra."

"I am very happy and grateful to have the opportunity to build a relationship with the wonderful colleagues from the Norrlandsoperan and to have the chance to introduce audiences in the region to a diverse and speculative repertoire that challenges and thrills the listeners," Strausser said.
