Today is Polish-Australian violin virtuoso Wanda Wilkomirska's 87th birthday.
A protege of Ede Zathureczki, Tadeusz Wroński and Henryk Szeryng, she shared 2nd prize at the 1952 Wieniawski International Violin Competition with Julian Sitkovetsky - with Igor Oistrakh claiming 1st prize.
Ms Wilkomirska premiered a number of important works - including solo repertoire by Bacewicz, Penderecki and Bargielski.
She currently teaches on faculty at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Australian Academy of Music - and serves as a jury member on a number of international competitions
