Tibor Junior International Violin Competition Announces 2024 Winners
The 16-year-old Canadian violinist Corina Deng has won first place with a 5,000 CHF cash prize
Hosted by the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition, the 4th International Tibor Junior Violin Competition for violinists aged 14–17, took place in Switzerland this August.
Corina Deng has won the 5,000 CHF First Prize, as well as the Audience Prize, the Calma Management Prize (which includes a year’s placement for concerts in Europe), and the Prize for the Best Interpretation for the commissioned compulsory work Onde, punti, voci by Ana Sokolovie.
Second prize with 2,000 CHF was awarded to the 17-year-old Viktor Vasilev from Bulgaria, and the 14-year-old Chinese violinist Qingyuan Yang won the third prize with 1,000 CHF, alongside the Jury Prize.
Yang was also awarded the c. 1735 Nicola Gagliano violin made available by the Atelier Schilbach.
More Foundation Prizes awarded included a Louis Bazin c.1940 violin bow and a recent bow made in Paris by S. Alexandre — these were awarded to Vasilev and the 15-year-old Polish violinist Natalia Dragan, respectively.
The three finalists were accompanied by the South Czech Philharmonic conducted by Jan Talich, featuring mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chappuis.
In addition to Chairman Pavel Vernikov and composer Ana Sokolovie, the 2024 jury comprised Marie-Claude Chappuis, Mario Hossen, Alessandro Padovan, and Alexandre Vinnitski.
