Toronto Symphony Orchestra Extends Music Director’s Contract

Conductor Gustavo Gimeno will remain in his position until the orchestra’s 2029/30 concert season

The 46-year-old Spanish conductor, Gustavo Gimeno, was first appointed as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) beginning in the 2020/21 season until 2025.

Following the TSO and Gimeno’s successful partnership, especially over the COVID-19 pandemic and for TSO’s upcoming centennial celebrations, it has been agreed that the conductor’s contract is extended for an additional five years.

So far, Gimeno’s tenure as TSO’s 10th music director has seen him create renewed community engagement and build the foundations for an initiative commissioning new works from emerging and established composers.

Gimeno is also the music director of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and music director designate with Madrid’s Teatro Real, where he will become music director in 2025. Upcoming performances include his guest conductor debuts with Staatskapelle Berlin and Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

“It is my extreme pleasure to continue to lead this wonderfully refined Orchestra,” Gimeno said. “The special bond that the musicians and I share, and the incredible audiences here in Toronto, have only deepened my love of this great city. I am honored to be able to guide this remarkable ensemble into the future.”

“I am thrilled that the strong partnership Gustavo and I have developed as the artistic and administrative leaders of this exceptional Orchestra will continue through the end of the decade,” said TSO’s CEO Mark Williams. “Our creative alignment and collaboration are serving this great institution and vibrant city. I deeply respect the boldness of Gustavo’s vision for the TSO.”

“This is a great day for the Toronto Symphony and our community,” added TSO Board of Directors Chair, Catherine Beck. “The musicians adore Gustavo, and their musicianship has never been stronger. We are very happy to make this announcement as we shape the next 100 years of this world-class cultural institution.”
