Jakob Dont Death

Austrian violinist and pedagogue Jakob Dont passed away in Vienna in 1888 at age 73.

A student of Josef Böhm and Georg Hellmesberger, he became a member of the Hofburgtheater Orchestra at age 16.

In 1853, he was appointed as a professor at the Pädagogisches Institut in Vienna and worked at the Wiener Konservatorium beginning in 1871.

Dont's instructional compositions were a great asset to violin teaching materials. His 24 Exercises Preparatory to the Studies of R. Kreutzer and P. Rode Op. 37 are considered mainstream technical studies for the violin.

Remembered as one of the greatest violin teachers of all time, his famed students included Leopold Auer.
