Los Angeles-based violinist and pedagogue Ms Alice Schoenfeld has passed away – aged 98

Respected Los Angeles-based violinist and pedagogue Ms Alice Schoenfeld has passed away – aged 98.

A student of Karl Klingler, Ms Schoenfeld served a teaching position on the violin faculty of the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for more than 6 decades - her famed students including Anne-Akiko Meyer, Suli Xue, Nathaniel Rosen and Timothy Landauer.

Along with her sister, cellist Eleonore Schoenfeld and former student Suli Xue, Ms Schoenfeld in 2013 co-founded the Schoenfeld International String Competition - now hosted every 2 years in Harbin, China.

"The esteemed Alice Schoenfeld and her sister Eleanore are two of the most important and significant string artists and teachers of any generation ..." William LaRue Jones, President of the American String Teachers Association has said.

"Their teaching at University of Southern California and professional excellence positively impacted and influenced string education and artist teaching internationally," he has said.

"I felt very privileged to be chair of the Jury for the Schoenfeld International String Competition in 2013 and I will never forget the wonderful moments sitting next to Ms Schoenfeld in the audience and on stage ..." violinist Christoph Poppen has said.

"May her remarkable and lovingly energetic spirit accompany all of us and many rising musicians of the future for a long time," he has said.
