Violinist Arkadij Winokurow Has Died, Aged 72

The Vienna-based violinist leaves a legacy of performing and teaching behind him

Arkadij Winokurow was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and studied initially at the Tchaikovsky National Conservatory.

He then relocated to Europe and spent periods studying with some of the twentieth century's most prominent violinists — including David Oistrakh and Leonid Kogan.

Winokurow held teaching positions in Finland and Vienna and then gained a professorship at the Bruckner University in Linz, Austria. In addition to this, Winokurow gave masterclasses all over the world and sat on the jury of various competitions.

For a time he was both the conductor and manager of the Kiev Chamber Orchestra in addition to being a well-respected chamber musician. He was first violinist of the Arte Viva Quartet and played regularly in the Vienna Philharmonic Ensemble.

Multiple Austrian composers have dedicated pieces to Winokurow, including Gunter Waldek, Rudolf Jungwirth, Erland Maria Freudenthaler, and Erik Freitag.

Our condolences to Mr. Winokurow's family, friends, students, and colleagues.
