19-year-old Julian Rhee from the United States has been awarded 1st prize at the 2020 Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition

19-year-old Julian Rhee from the United States has just minutes ago been awarded 1st prize at the 2020 Elmar Oliveira International Violin Competition - in Boca Raton, Florida, United States.

A high school graduate of the Music Institute of Chicago Academy where he studied with Almita and Roland Vamos and current undergraduate student of Miriam Fried at the New England Conservatory, Julian is a former major prize winner at the Johansen and Klein International String Competitions.

He will receive US $30,000, significant career development, publicity and management support – plus a number of important performance opportunities.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 25-year-old Jun Min Choi from South Korea and 27-year-old Igor Khukhua from Russia.

2020 Finalist, 19-year-old Vikram Francesco Sedona from Italy was awarded an 'Honorable Mention'.

This year's US $2500 'Community Engagement' prize was also awarded to Julian Rhee.

The 2020 jury comprised: David Cerone (Chairman), Andrés Cárdenes, Ilya Kaler, Sung-Ju Lee, Silvia Marcovici, Gerardo Ribeiro, Barry Shiffman and Kathleen Winkler.

In accordance with the competition’s scoring policy, juror Silvia Marcovici was not permitted to cast any votes or opinions on the performances of her current student, finalist Vikram Francesco Sedona.

Juror Ilya Kaler was not permitted to cast any votes or opinions on the performances of his current student, finalist Jun Min Choi.

An average score from the remaining non-conflicting jurors was applied to both candidate’s total calculations and results.
