The sixteenth edition of the Cliburn Competition took place from June 2–18, 2022 in Fort Worth, Texas at Texas Christian University's Van Cliburn Concert Hall and Bass Performance Hall.
Open to international pianists aged 18 through 30, this year's competition finals featured six competitors from Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, South Korea, and the United States. From 388 applicants, 30 pianists were invited to compete for gold.
While Yunchan Lim won first, the $50,000 Silver Medal went to 31-year-old Russian Anna Geniushene. The $25,000 bronze medal was awarded to 28-year-old Dmytro Choni from Ukraine.
During the final round, each pianist performed two piano concertos with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marin Alsop. First prize winner Yunchan Lim played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Minor, op. 37 and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, op. 30 in the final round.
A current student of Minsoo Sohn at the Korea National University of Arts, Yunchan Lim won the second prize at the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists in 2018. He was also the youngest winner of Korea’s Isang Yun International Competition at the age of 15 in 2019.
