The Winners & The Grinners - 2013 International Competition & Bursary Prize Winners

As the 2013 competition year winds to an end, we take a look back at the year's major international competition prize winners and bursary recipients - including VC 'Young Artists' Nikki Chooi, Richard Lin, Kian Soltani, Lara BoschkorBella Hristova, Fedor Roudine, Stephen Waarts and Soo-Been Lee.

23 year old VC 'Young Artist' Nikki Chooi, from Canada was awarded 1st Prize at the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to VC 'Young Artists' Sarah Christian from Germany and Boson Mo from Canada.

21 year old VC 'Young Artist' Richard Lin, from Taiwan/USA was awarded 1st Prize at the Sendai International Violin Competition in Japan. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to VC 'Young Artist' Tatsuki Narita from Japan and Chieri Tomii from Japan.

20 year old VC 'Young Artist' Kian Soltani, from Austria was awarded 1st prize at the Paulo International Cello Competition in Finland. Joint 2nd prizes were awarded to Pablo Ferrández Castro from Spain and Aurélien Pascal from France.

13 year old VC 'Young Artist' German wunderkind Lara Boschkor was awarded 1st prize at the Henryk Szeryng International Violin Competition in Mexico. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to VC 'Young Artist' Igor Pikayzen from Russia/USA and Jeanine Thorpe from Great Britain.

VC 'Young Artist' Lara Boschkor was also awarded 1st Prize at the Carl Flesh International Violin Competition in Hungary. Joint 2nd prizes were awarded to Ami Oike from Japan and Eva Rabchevska from Ukraine. 3rd prize was awarded to Amelia Maszonska from Poland.

VC 'Young Artists' Bella Hristova, Itamar Zorman and the Escher String Quartet were awarded 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grants.

21 year old VC 'Young Artist' Fédor Roudine, from Russia/France was awarded 1st Prize at the Rodolfo Lipizer International Violin Competition in Italy. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Amalia Hall from New Zealand and David Petrlik from France.

3 x 1st prizes, including 17 year old VC 'Young Artists' Stephen Waarts, were awarded at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, in New York.

20 year old VC 'Young Artist' William Hagen was awarded the 'Dorothy DeLay Memorial Fellowship' at the Aspen Music Festival and School.

13 year old VC 'Young Artist' Soo-Been Lee, from South Korea was awarded 1st Prize in the Junior Division of the David Oistrakh International Violin Competition in Russia. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Ayaka Uchio from Japan and Elvin Ganiyev from Azerbaijan/Turkey.

21 Year Old Ji-Yoon Lee, from South Korea was awarded 1st Prize in the Senior Division of the David Oistrakh International Violin Competition in Russia. Joint 2nd prizes were awarded to Kristi Gjezi and Meruert Carmenova. 3rd prize was awarded to Elly Suh.

20 year old Japanese violinist Sunao Goko was awarded 1st prize at the Tibor Varga Sion Valais International Violin Competition in Switzerland. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Liya Petrova from Bulgaria and Eimi Wakui from Japan.

VC 'Young Artist' Russian violinist Nikita Boriso-Glebsky was awarded the prestigious 'Prince Rainier III' prize at the Monaco World Music Masters Competition in Monte Carlo.

22 year old Marc Bouchkov, from Belgium was awarded 1st prize at the Montreal International Violin Competition. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 16 year old VC 'Young Artists' Stephen Waarts and Zeyu Victor Li.

The American-based Dover Quartet, comprising violinists Joel Link and Bryan Lee, violist Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt and cellist Camden Shaw, was awarded 1st prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition in Canada.

20 year old Romanian violinist Ioana Cristina Goicea was awarded 1st Prize at the Brahms International Violin Competition in Austria. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Benjamin Marquise Gilmore from Great Britain and Danfeng Shen from China.

13 year old Rennosuke Fukuda, from Japan was awarded 1st Prize in the Junior Division, and the Reinhold Wurth Scholarship for the ‘Most Promising Talent’, at the Kloster Schontal International Violin Competition in Germany. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to Jaewon Wee from Korea and Ziyu He from China.

Yi Yang Jiang from China, Naina Kobzareva from Russia and Hui Hua from China were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Intermediate Division of the Kloster Schontal International Violin Competition in Germany.

Elena Tarosyan from Russia, Olga Sroubkova from the Czech Repulic and Reina Shibutani from Japan were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Senior Division of the Kloster Schontal International Violin Competition in Germany.

Sophie Wang, Sueye Park and Ziyu He were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the 14 Years and Younger category of the Louis Spohr International Violin Competition in Germany.

Nathan Mierdl, Anna Tanaka and Vilmos Csikos were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the 15 to 17 year old category of the Louis Spohr International Violin Competition in Germany.

David Castro-Balbi, Reina Shibutani and Eugene Chepovetsky were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the 18 to 20 year old category of the Louis Spohr International Violin Competition in Germany.

25 year old Sejune Kim, from South Korea and 20 year old Karolina Errera, from Russia were awarded joint 1st prize at the 2013 Jan Rakowski International Viola Competition in Poland.

25 year old Markiyan Melnychenko, from Australia and 22 year old Dasol Jeong Da, from Canada were awarded joint 1st prize at the inaugural Oleh Krysa International Violin Competition in the Ukraine.

22 year old cellist Christina Lamprea was awarded 1st Place Laureate of the Senior Division at the Sphinx Competition in Detroit, USA. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to violist Dana Kelley and double bassist Nicholas Villalobos.

28 year old South Korean violist Yura Lee was awarded 1st prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Germany – the only 1st Prize awarded across the 4 violin, viola, piano trio and bassoon categories.

20 year old Sihao He, from China was awarded 1st Prize at the Gaspar Cassado International Cello Competition in Japan.

19 year old Canadian violinist Blake Pouliot was awarded the 2013 Canada Council Michael Measures Prize.

17 year old Korean-born violinist Youjin Lee was awarded 1st prize at the 2013 Stulberg International String Competition, in the USA. 2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded to 16 year American violinist Ariel Horowitz and 19 year old American violinist Laura Park.

And, the Chinese-based Amber Quartet was awarded 1st prize at the Asia-Pacific Chamber Music Competition in Melbourne, Australia.
