WQXR Announces 2023 Artist Propulsion Lab Participants
This year's cohort includes VC Artists cellist Zlatomir Fung and violinist Alexi Kenney
Formed during the COVID-19 pandemic to support musicians, the Artist Propulsion Lab (APL) of the WQXR radio station in New York, aims to propel the careers of emerging artists, support the future of classical music, and provides artists opportunities to create and showcase their work.
Throughout the one-year period, the five artists will be offered the space and support to create new work and avenues to share their perspectives and projects with radio, digital, and in-person audiences. This year, they will perform in The Greene Space at WNYC/WQXR and collaborate with the classical music station to develop their artistry.
WQXR’s staff will also offer guidance and expertise on the technology for high-quality multi-platform production and help build their audiences as the APL artists refine their creative vision.
Each of the APL participants will have the chance to expand conventional notions of Western classical music and innovate ways to make it more relevant and accessible for younger audiences.
The artists were selected from more than 100 nominated by a committee of over 55 music professionals including presenters, educators, and leadership organizations that support young creators.
“Here's to WQXR and moving our music FORWARD,” Curtis Stewart said. “Will be sharing projects across their platforms, new recordings, commission some new work, and perform in The Greene Space.”
