Young Concert Artists Names Alistair Coleman as Composer-in-Residence for 2023

Alistair Coleman will receive a three-year management contract, as well as funding to complete three commissions

Young Concert Artists (YCA) named composer Alistair Coleman as their composer-in-residence for 2023. Coleman was selected for the role from a highly competitive field of 150 applicants, including four other finalists: Bobby Ge, Luke Haaksma, Hannah Ishizaki, and Max Vinetz.

During his tenure, he will be afforded a stipend of $18,000 to write three commissioned works, which will be premiered in upcoming concerts. He will also receive a three-year comprehensive management contract.

Alistair Coleman is currently studying for a master's degree with Richard Danielpour, Nick DiBerardino, Jonathan Bailey Holland, Amy Beth Kirsten, and Steven Mackey at the Curtis Institute, where he also received his undergraduate degree.

His recent commissions include a concerto for violinist Soovin Kim, a concerto for Grammy-award-winning cellist Zuill Bailey, and a sonata for Joseph Alessi, Principal Trombonist of the New York Philharmonic. He also recently collaborated with Midori and Ida Kavafian to write a solo test piece for violinists auditioning at Curtis.

The jury was comprised of composers Katherine Balch, Kenji Bunch, Chen Yi, Missy Mazzoli, and Carlos Simon, pianists Anthony De Mare and Jeffrey Swann, flutist Brandon Patrick George, and violinist Anne Akiko Meyers.

"I’m thrilled and grateful to be joining the YCA roster as their next composer-in-residence," Coleman said. "It’s exciting to imagine the creative possibilities this will afford, especially through sustained collaborations with other YCA artists."

"I look forward to the many opportunities this residency offers to grow both my artistry and career, all with the support and guidance of YCA," he added.

"YCA is delighted to welcome Alistair Coleman as our next Composer-in-Residence," said Daniel Kellogg, the President of YCA. "His music deeply impressed our jury and it will be a great pleasure to support his work. Alistair joins an illustrious list of YCA composers who began their careers on our roster."
