Benedetti, Grosvenor and Kanneh-Mason's New Album, "Beethoven Triple Concerto"

Released on Decca Classics, the album features Beethoven's Triple Concerto

Violinist Nicola Benedetti, pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, and cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason have joined forces to release an album, Beethoven Triple Concerto, in collaboration with the Philharmonia Orchestra and conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

Released on Decca Classics, the album features Beethoven's Triple Concerto Op. 56 and recordings of Beethoven's folk songs with baritone Gerald Finley. Music from Benedetti's Scotland, Kanneh-Mason's beloved Wales, and inspiration from Finley's Orcadian ancestry round out the album, concluding with a track featuring the trio alone: Kreisler's arrangement of "Londonderry Air," also known as "Danny Boy."

Although Beethoven never composed a cello concerto, the cello is given the first solos in each of the three movements of the Triple Concerto.

Reflecting on this collaboration, Sheku Kanneh-Mason shares, “It was an absolute joy and privilege to make music for the first time with two musicians I grew up admiring. I first heard them both on television in the finals of BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2004, and like many participants and winners in that competition, they became massive inspirations to me."

The three former BBC Young Musician competition finalists joined together for this collaboration featuring the first recording of Beethoven's Triple Concerto on the label. The trio performed together in London in June 2023 for a live performance at the Royal Festival Hall.
