Marc Coppey on What Makes the Saline royale Academy Unique

The academy offers one of the largest online catalogs of classical music masterclasses with the world's renowned teachers

Led by Artistic Director Marc Coppey, the Saline royale Academy offers both in-person academies in Arc-et-Senans, France, and an extensive catalog of immersive masterclass videos recorded in HD quality.

With the aim to create the most complete and prestigious international catalog of filmed masterclasses for classical music, the organization's online platform will have over 600 masterclasses, concerts, and interviews available to watch by the end of 2023.

We got a chance to speak with Marc Coppey about the innovative program.

When and why was the Saline royale Academy founded?

The Saline royale Academy was founded in 2020 with the mission of assisting young musicians in their musical training and careers by providing access to the teachings of the greatest professors, regardless of their location.
Our main objectives:
1. To create the most comprehensive and prestigious international catalog of filmed classical music masterclasses.
2. To offer young musicians worldwide the opportunity to realize their dreams and expand their careers internationally by learning from the greatest music professors at the Saline royale Academy (France) and by providing 24/7 access to online music education of the highest quality.
3. To preserve, in high definition, the exceptional heritage represented by the richness and diversity of the teachings and techniques of the greatest professors, in the face of the homogenization of playing styles.

Why do you think it was important to offer both online and in-person academies?

The decision to offer both online and in-person academies is driven by our unwavering commitment to providing young musicians with the highest quality of music education, regardless of their geographic location and financial means. We believe that talent and dedication should be the primary determinants of one's ability to access world-class musical instruction and resources.

Our online masterclasses play a pivotal role in this mission. They serve as a bridge to bring the exceptional teaching of renowned professors to young musicians worldwide. The online platform levels the playing field, ensuring that no talented individual is left without access to the expertise and guidance of these great musicians.

Since 2020, despite the pandemic, dedicated and talented students have come to refine their skills with prestigious musicians. In collaboration with our partner institutions such as the Colburn School in Los Angeles, the Royal College of Music in London, the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin, and the International Summer Academy in Nice, we aim to provide the most enriching learning experience for future professionals.

The Saline royale Academy, as a private higher education institution, offers an immersive musical environment on a unique campus, where students have the opportunity to meet renowned professors and perform in a culturally rich setting that combines architecture, visual art, and garden design.

In essence, our goal extends beyond merely offering masterclasses; it is to empower young musicians with the necessary tools and knowledge to propel them forward in their professional careers, irrespective of their socio-economic background. We believe that every aspiring musician should have the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to the world of classical music.

Who would be most appropriate to apply to the in-person academies?

This academy is aimed at student musicians and singers from music schools or instrumentalists at the beginning of their careers.

Can you tell us about some of the teachers featured?

As the Artistic Director of the Saline royale Academy, my role is to invite the most talented musicians of their generation, who are already teaching at prestigious schools or conservatories and are committed to passing on their knowledge to the younger generation.

We have already hosted over 80 renowned professors, including pianists, violinists, cellists, violists, flutists, singers, clarinetists, chamber musicians, oboists, and trombonists.

Some notable professors include:
- Miriam Fried, a noted pedagogue and professor of violin at the New England Conservatory in Boston.
- Clive Greensmith, professor of cello and chamber music at the Colburn School in Los Angeles and a founding member of the Montrose Trio.
- Lars Anders Tomter, professor of viola at the State Academy in Oslo.
- Nelson Goerner, a renowned classical pianist with strong affiliations with the Mozarteum Argentino and the Chopin Institute in Warsaw.
- Davide Formisano, principal flute in the "Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala" and a professor for flute at the Musikhochschule Stuttgart.

You can find a complete list of our professors on our website.

What differentiates the Saline royale Academy from other online and in-person academies?

> The quality, content, and format of our videos:
- Masterclass format: Interaction between the professor and the student, offering a

pedagogical dimension to track the student's progress, apply the professor's advice, and assess performance.

- An innovative video player that allows users to choose different camera angles, providing a personalized perspective.

- Content selection: Choice of works or repertoires tailored to competition, exam, or recital goals.

- In-house production at the Saline royale d'Arc-et-Senans with a professional team ensuring exceptional video and sound quality.

> We cater to high-level musicians preparing for international competitions, particularly end-of-cycle students at major institutions.

> Our catalog offers a wide range of musical practices, including piano, violin, cello, flute, singing, viola, clarinet, oboe, and chamber music. We have prestigious partnerships with institutions like the Royal College of Music, the Royal Irish Academy of Music, the Colburn School, and the International Summer Academy in Nice. Our content is available in English, French, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.

On top of multiple performances, the in-person students leave with a professional recording. Can you tell us more about this significant opportunity?

Academy participants have the opportunity to perform daily in an open stage setting, with their concerts professionally recorded by our team. The goal is to allow students to use these recordings to enhance their applications to schools, competitions, and for personal promotion.

Tell us about the historical place where the Academy is taking place?

The Saline royale, a UNESCO World Heritage site, provides an ideal environment for work and progress. The presence of nature, in harmony with the monumental architecture of Claude Nicolas Ledoux, an architect of the Enlightenment, creates a conducive setting for musical expression. This has been experienced for several years through Jordi Savall's artistic residency with Le Concert des Nations and the French Youth Orchestra conducted by Kristiina Poska.

Can you tell us about the new recording technology used to film the masterclasses? Why did you think it was important to have multiple camera angles?

Many young musicians do not have access to high-level instruction provided by our professors. Today, you can find masterclasses and lessons on platforms like YouTube, but the quality is often insufficient. Our goal, through this video system composed of four camera feeds merged into a single video, is to offer users a unique immersive and interactive experience. This allows users to choose the camera angle that best suits their needs and follow the professor, student, or performance at their discretion, without any interruption in sound or image. The quality of both sound and image is in very high definition, providing an experience as if the user were in the room with the professor and student.

The Saline royale Academy is the only platform in the classical music field to offer this feature. In partnership with Omnilive, we have developed an exclusive feedback module to continually enhance pedagogy and musical improvement.

Are the masterclasses accessible to students and teachers in different languages?

Yes, you can filter the catalog by language. The entire catalog is available in English, and more than a hundred video contents are available in French, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.

What additional material and information does the platform offer?

- Exclusive interviews with professors offering guidance, insights, and perspectives on topics such as career management, competition preparation, stress management, repertoire selection, and more.
- Music sheets with professor's recommendations available for download.
- Concerts performed by professors at the heart of the Saline royale, offering a unique experience.
