Violinist Alena Baeva Becomes Artist-in-Residence at the Bournemouth Symphony

Baeva will make multiple concerto appearances, as well as give a recital with pianist Vadym Kholodenko

Violinist Alena Baeva has been named as the new Artist-in-Residence at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (BSO), in Poole, England.

Baeva will perform the concerti of Mendelssohn and Berg at concerts in Poole, Exeter, Portsmouth, and Basingstoke, before returning to Poole in April 2025 to give a recital. She will be joined for this by the pianist Vadym Kholodenko.

The announcement comes at an exciting time for the BSO, with two new conductors joining its artistic team: Mark Wigglesworth becomes its Chief Conductor, while Chloé van Soeterstède has been appointed as Principal Guest Conductor. They will perform a shared Brahms cycle to mark the occasion.

In addition, the young conductor Enyi Okpara will make his BSO debut as their new Calleva Assistant Conductor.

Hailing originally from Luxembourg, Alena Baeva won the International Henryk Wieniawski Competition when she was just sixteen years old. In recent seasons, she has appeared with Die Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Göteborgs Symfoniker, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National d’Île de France, Orchestre National du Capitôle de Toulouse, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, and in recital at the Wigmore Hall.

Her repertoire includes more than fifty concerti, and recent performances have promoted lesser-known composers such as Bacewicz, Karaev, Karłowicz, and Silvestrov.

Baeva currently plays on the “ex-William Kroll” Guarneri del Gesù of 1738, on generous loan from an anonymous patron.
