Applications Open for the David Walter Composition Competition
Presented by the International Society of Bassists, prizes of $1,000 are available across four categories
The International Society of Bassists (ISB) is now receiving applications for its ISB/David Walter Composition Competition, which in 2024 is dedicated to the memory of Robert Black.
This biennial competition aims to encourage the creation of new repertoire for the double bass, as well as raise awareness of previously unknown works for the instrument.
While there are no specific rules regarding a work's performance history, publication, or recordings, entries must not have entered the standard double bass repertoire in the opinion of the jury.
The competition has four categories, with a prize of $1,000 offered to the winner of each. The categories are as follows: unaccompanied solo double bass, chamber (must include a prominent double bass part), bass ensemble (for two to eight basses), and double bass with electric media.
Submitted works should be between 5 and 15 minutes long, and may be in any style. Online entries must be received by June 1, 2024 — and the winners will be announced on or shortly after September 1, 2024.
