Happy Birthday, Double Bassist Edgar Meyer!
Today is classical, jazz and bluegrass double bass virtuoso and composer Edgar Meyer’s 64th birthday
Edgar Meyer is the recipient of the MacArthur Award and is highly regarded as both a performer and composer.
A musician of great diversity, his collaborations have spanned a wide range of musical styles and talents, including projects with Tessa Lark, Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, Sam Bush, and James Taylor.
Meyer was Composer-in-Residence with the Alabama Symphony, where he premiered his third concerto for double bass and orchestra.
His compositions have been performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and Minnesota Orchestra, just to name a few.
Meyer began studying bass at the age of five under the tutelage of his father. He continued further studies with Stuart Sankey. He was the recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant in 1994 and became the only bassist to receive the Avery Fisher Prize in 2000.
Currently, he serves as Visiting Professor of Double Bass at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.
