Germany’s Oper Leipzig Appoints New Kapellmeister
Conductor Yura Yang will serve as the company’s first kapellmeister in the 2024/25 season
Having served as first coordinated Kapellmeister of the Staatstheater Karlsruhe since 2020, conductor Yura Yang will be joining Oper Leipzig in the same role as of the next concert season.
Additionally, Yang has been assistant to the general music director at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe since December 2022.
A graduate of the Detmold University of Music and the University of Music and Theatre Munich, Yang began working as a solo répétiteur with conducting duties at the Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen from 2012 to 2018.
In the 2014/15 season, she was awarded a conducting scholarship by the Bergische Symphoniker, and in the following year, she was included in the Conductors’ Forum of the German Music Council and on the 2019 list of “Maestros of Tomorrow.”
From 2018, she worked as Kapellmeister of the Kiel Theatre and musical assistant to its general music director. In 2019, she became first kapellmeister and deputy general music director at Theater Aachen.
Her recent performances include those at Semperoper Dresden, Brucknerhaus Linz, Aalto-Theater Essen, and as conductor of symphony concerts at theaters across German cities such as Erfurt and Gießen. She has also made guest appearances in Linz, Essen, and Dortmund.
With over 600 employees, Oper Leipzig is the city’s largest in-house cultural institution. Yang will perform with the acclaimed Gewandhaus Orchestra, which has played for all performances of the opera and the Leipzig ballet since 1840.
