London Philharmonic Orchestra Appoints New Sub-Principal Cellist

Australian-Korean cellist Waynne Kwon will step into the role, having previously appeared with the LPO as Guest Principal

Australian-Korean cellist Waynne Kwon has recently been appointed as the new Sub-Principal Cellist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO).

A graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, Kwon holds bachelor's and master's degrees as well as the PGDipAS (Performance). During his studies, Kwon was the recipient of the Sir John Barbirolli Cello Prize, the Leonard Rose Award for the best final recital, and the RNCM Gold Medal. He also won the university's concerto competition.

As a chamber musician, Kwon appears frequently with duo partner Victor Lim (piano), and together the pair won the 2020 Tunnell Trust Music Award. Kwon has also been a member of the Louko Piano Trio, who won all the chamber music prizes at the RNCM, appeared at the Manchester Mid-day Concert Series, and won the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe Chamber Music Competition. 

Kwon has given solo appearances with the BBC Philharmonic, Blackburn Symphony Orchestra, Penrith Symphony Orchestra, and Concertante Ensemble. He has also performed in renowned venues around the world such as the Sydney Opera House, Angel Place City Recital Hall, Seoul Arts Centre, Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Southbank Centre,  King’s Place, and St. John’s Smith Square.
