The UK’s Royal College of Music Appoints New Violin Professor

Australian violinist Emily Sun has now joined the string faculty of her alma mater

Australian violinist Emily Sun has begun her tenure as professor of violin at the Royal College of Music (RCM), where she completed her Bachelor and Master of Music degrees.

In addition to her teaching position, Sun is a touring violinist who recently joined the roster at Percius Management and was appointed as associate artist of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for 2023.

Sun has appeared with the major orchestras across Australia, Europe, the U.S., and China. Her solo debuts include Sydney Opera House, Wigmore Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Tchaikovsky Great Hall Moscow, and Seoul Arts Center. She has also performed at Buckingham Palace alongside Maxim Vengerov in the presence of the Prince of Wales, and has performed at the Royal Palace of Brussels where Belgium’s King and Queen were present.

Also an acclaimed recording artist, Sun’s 2021 album “Nocturnes,” on ABC Classics/Universal remained No. 1 on the Classical charts for a month and was shortlisted for “Best Classical Album 2021” in the ARIA Awards. Her playing has also been broadcast on international radio stations.

Her many accolades include RCM’s Tagore Gold Medal, Australia’s 2018 ABC Young Performers Award, the UK’s 2016 Royal Overseas League Music Competition, and prizes at the Brahms, Yampolsky, and Lipizer International Violin Competitions.

Sun studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with Robin Wilson and later attended RCM studying with Itzhak Rashkovsky, and Belgium’s Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth where she received her Artist Diploma under the tutelage of Augustin Dumay. Her additional mentors have included Pinchas Zukerman, Vengerov, and Ivry Gitlis.

Sun plays a 1760 Nicolò Gagliano violin, kindly loaned to her through the Beare’s International Violin Society.
