Hungarian-British conductor Sir Georg Solti died on this day in 1997 – aged 84.
Widely respected as one of the finest conductors of all time, he served principal conducting positions with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Royal Opera House, Bavarian State Opera, Orchestre de Parisand the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
His 1000th performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was scheduled for October 1997 - yet Maestro Solti passed away suddenly one month prior.
