Grant Llewellyn Returns to Conducting

After suffering a stroke last summer, Welsh conductor and music director of the North Carolina Symphony and L’Orchestre National de Bretagne returns to the stage

Llewellyn came back to the concert platform with L’Orchestre National de Bretagne in May of this year.

His first post-recovery concert, titled "Hope," included Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and concertos by Rossini and Saint-Saëns performed by clarinetist Pierre Génisson and violinist Hugues Borsarello.

With mentors such as Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Masur, and Andre Previn, Llewellyn's conducting career was propelled in 1985 when he was awarded a conducting fellow position at the Tanglewood Music Center.

During the recent months of recovery, Llewellyn embarked on the process of relearning his current conducting capabilities.

"I had to come to terms with what would it mean, as a conductor, to only have use of my left arm, probably without a baton and anything else that's left to me," he said. "And that's where I am now, it's a voyage of discovery."
