Remembering the Great Leonid Kogan, Gone Today in 1982 – Aged Just 58

Legendary Soviet violinist Leonid Kogan died on this day in 1982, 31 years ago – aged just 58.

A protege of Abram Yampolsky, he was a former 1st Prize winner at the 1951 Queen Elisabeth International Violin Competition – and is remembered in history as one of the greatest representatives of the Soviet School.

He died from a sudden heart attack on a train near the city of Mytishchi, Russia – whilst travelling between Moscow and Yaroslavl to perform a concert with his son, conductor and violinist Pavel Kogan.
