French virtuoso violinist Ginette Neveu was born on this day in 1919 – 100 years ago.
A student of Jules Boucherit, George Enescu and Carl Flesch, Ms Neveu achieved worldwide fame at age 15 – after out-placing the then 27 year old David Oistrakh to claim 1st prize at the Wieniawski International Violin Competition.
She died tragically in 1949, aged just 30, when her Air France flight crashed into a mountain in the Azores.
